from Pennsylvania who settled into Virginia (&/W.Va)

John Ulrich Swope

* Assumed name of as Joseph (Yost(German)) after his fathers death.
* Settled in Va,(now near Swope's Depot) and then claimed lands
* West of the Appalachians, at Swopes Knobs near Wolf Creek WVA.

John Ulrich (Joseph) is the 'Early Pioneer" who hid in a hollow
Poplar tree to avoid pursuit by indians.

He built a log cabin and brought his wife and young family over from old Virginia.
His son Michael was the first white-child born in that part of the 'new' Virginia.
After many attacks, one which resulted in the kidnapping of his young son,
he bitterly hated the indians.

He died from complications from a broken leg
(... and poorly mended indian wound... )
as a result of being thrown from his horse.
His Burial site is unknown
