A group of dancers headed up by Bill and Joyce G. While the group hasn't officially disbanded it has not had any official functions under the name "Bootscooters" for a while. Check out the Dixie's Dance hall section for a look at the Bootscooters.. Dixie's Dance Hall
The type dance is a mixture of line and couple dances. A separate place inside Denim & Diamonds houses "the Mine" containing music for people interested more in rock music than country. D&D is located at 5353 Mendenhall Mall (corner of Mendenhall and Winchester ) in Memphis, Tennessee - Alcohol is served at this location. However, there is a family night with no alcohol, call for details. - (901) 365-3633 click here for pictures and more information . Most of the music is DJ based but big names have played ad D&D including recently (October, 2000) Brooks and Dunn and several years ago the Dixie Chicks played (before they were well known!). Also visit D&D's WEB site at: http://www.denimanddiamonds.com
Led by Ken and Jeannette Dixon, the Dixie Dancers have a variety of activities including dance lessons. While they have officially disbanded last years Christmas party/reunion was a blast, we may see more of these each year. For more information call Ken Dixon at (901) 872-6662.
Spurs - As of October 2000 advertisements have been on the radio regarding the re-opening of Spurs. As many Memphian's remember Spurs was one of the hottest country western dance halls/bar's around (many years ago) until it burnt down (6+ years ago) at it's location across from the Hickory Ridge Mall... The new location is said to be on Lamar north of Winchester. While the advertisements indicate secure parking it's not a part of town I even go into during the day! The advertisements for Spurs indicate it is both country music as well as non-country...
Shooters
Known as a 5 Star Honky - Tonk, Shooters is housed in a old cabin type building. Live bands sometimes play although most of the time a DJ plays the music to dance too! The size of the place has been expanded in recent years... Alcohol is served. Shooters is located at 4293 Fayette Road (near Austin Peay Hywy and Stage Road) in a section of Memphis called Raleigh. For more information call (901) 388-4135. For more information and pictures as well as a look into a music video shot at Shooters, please click on the link below:

Country Music Showcase with Billy Owen's All American Band with guest singers. Saturdays 8:00pm until 11:30pm at the Strand Theatre located at 7979 Wilkinsville road in Millington, Tennessee. A live band plays each Saturday night with a wide variety of guest singers. The Strand was orginally built as a movie theatre in 1939 but has become the home of the Country Music Showcase. The Strand has theatre style seats where those who do not dance can watch and while those who do dance can dance on any 2 of the dance floors next to the stage (although the floors are small). The type dance is mostly line dance although some couple dances are performed... The show has a family type atmosphere with no alcohol. Typically the show has anywhere from 20 to 30 guest singers a night! For more information call (901) 872-1420. Thursday nights are a good time to visit, the band practices while the dancers practice dancing. No admission on Thursday nights. Singers can try out on Thursday's for possible inclusion in the show on Saturday night. Thursday nights are also the night all the dancers practice dancing and others just come to listen to the band practice. Admission is FREE on Thursday nights and $5 on Saturday night. This is, as far as I know, the longest running Country Music Show in the mid-south as they have been in operation for more than 20 years! Some gospel music is often included on the Saturday night show although Friday nights are dedicated to Gospel music only.

The Country Volunteers with guest bands and singers. 7:30pm Saturdays. No alcohol and
smoke-free, 2984 Harvester Lane in Frayser, call (901) 683-3310. Small dance floor,
appears to cater more to the older crowd and slow dances from the descriptions I have
heard but I've haven't visited the place myself.
I've heard about a variety of dance lessons at Mclemore's as well as Bartlett Community Center although I do not have any information on this. Also the University of Memphis has a class consisting of 4 sessions regarding country western dancing which includes a mixture of line and partner dancing. The class is held under the U of M Continuing Education program and typically costs $40. I know that often private clubs in the area also support country music and country western dancing...
This is just some of the highlights of country western dance in the Memphis area, if you know of a particular place that you would like to see listed please email me at: garycox@netten.net

Location: 120 Second Avenue, Nashville, TN 37201 Telephone: 615-251-1000 - The Wildhorse has changed as of late into what is being called a "sports bar". The dance floor has been significantly reduced (tables are now on the floor). While the music is still country the Wildhorse Saloon is not what it once was. You might remember seeing the Wildhorse Saloon on TNN a few years back as a dance show and many shows were once filmed at this location.
Americana - Located at Winchester and Lamar. I've heard this place advertised on the radio multiple times as having country music, open several nights a week from 4:00pm until 7:00am. However, it is in a part of town that most people do not go into at night (or even the day time)! I'm not sure this is even open anymore.
Saturdays 8:00pm until 11:00pm with a variety of different bands or DJ music playing each Saturday. The place is setup in what once was a store in a shopping center now converted to a dance hall. Tables surround the floor with a stage and a live band or DJ up front. No alcohol is allowed and it provides for good family entertainment. AG's is located in the Plaza Shopping Center located at 7840 Church street in Millington, Tennessee. For table reservations or for more information call (901) 377-1646 or (901) 872-0055. The building housing Neon Moon is somewhat unique as part of it sits on stilts
over a lake and has a nice look inside. Neon Moon is located at , 1600 Munson Rd (near
Sycamore View and I-40) , in Memphis, Tennessee. Alcohol is served at his location. -
(901) 383-1115. However, Neon Moon has changed to "Mardi Gras" and it is
not country music and for that matter may not even be open anymore at all!
Located at Lamar and Winchester Cowboys, formerly The Rodeo is located in the same place as the old Midnight Rodeo. It has re-opened several times but not as country music... I believe a club called Spurs is now using this location.
West Tennessee Opry
Located on Highway 51 south of Dyersburg. This was once a great place to dance on Friday and Saturday nights and features a live country music band. It closed several years ago. Click here for a few pictures from the past.
