 Special  Announcements:

Dixie Dancers Final Party

For everything there is a season - a time for beginning, and a time for ending.  We've reached some ending times for the Dixie Dancers.  Already we have ended our exhibitions due to lack of participation.  We have had to turn down several requests for the Dixie Dancers to perform at nursing homes and at community events this year because we didn't want to ruin the good reputation the DD's have enjoyed over the past several years.  Four or five Dixie Dancers just can not turn in as enjoyable a performance as 10 or 15 dancers.

Now the time has come to end the regularly scheduled Dixie Dancer basic couples and line dance classes.  Again, we know that the ending time is here because of lack of participation.  In the past, a large part of our success at teaching has been the individual help that has been provided to beginning students by more experienced Dixie Dancers coming to class as helpers.  We have reached the point several times this year where we have no experienced dancers helping with the class.  As a result, our students don't get the individual help that they need to make them feel successful quickly and they don't spread the word that our classes are fun and country dancing is easy to learn.  The result is that our class size has dwindled down to 6, 5 or 4 in many cases.  It is very difficult, as instructors, for us to spend the time and effort in prepairing material and to see so little attendance.

We have also reached the time for ending the weekly Dixie Dancer workshop.  Although some of you have been particularly faithful in coming out on Wednesdays to take advantage of the fellowship and exercise as well as free dance instructions, our numbers have dwindled drastically.  We are averaging only a half dozen or fewer dancers each week.  There is hardly any point in typing up the space at Baker Community Center for so few of us, no matter how much we enjoy getting together.

We have enjoyed the privilege of getting to know all of you wonderful people, and we still consider you a part of our extended family.  We would like to be able to continue holding our annual golf outing and/or family reunion picnic, bout would need to know if anyone else is interested.  If you are interested in helping organize and raise funds for such projects, please contact us at (901) 872-6662 or email khdixon@msn.com.

God bless you all!  We will cherish the many fond (and funny) memories of your association with you over the past several years.   We hop you will remember us and, most of all, and keep dancing, hugging and having fun!!!

The 1999 Dixie Dancer Christmas party was such a success I wouldn't be surprized if we did not see more Dixie Dancer re-unions in the future!

THE DIXIE DANCERS

WHO/WHAT ARE THEY?... The Dixie Dancers (or "Double D's) are NOT a club of any sort. There are no regulations, no dues, no officers, and no organization. We are strictly a social group of people who enjoy Country Western music and dancing and having fun. We tend to share our enjoyment by performing dance exhibitions at community functions, retirement centers, and nursing homes and by teaching Country Western dancing to others. We DO have three rules:

1. Have Fun!

2. Hug a Lot!

3. Share what you know!

Shown here are a few Dixie Dancer's learning a partner dance at Baker Community Center in Millington.

HOW DO OTHERS JOIN THEM?... Anyone who can dance the basic country western dances and agrees to follow our three rules, is welcome. We usually extend an invitation during the third night of our Level II class.

WHO CAN HELP WITH A CLASS?... Usually, new DD's are asked to complete two of our eight-week (Level I and Level II) course cycles before acting as assistant instructors during classes. Exceptions are determined by the head instructor of that class.

HOW CAN I LEARN MORE AFTER I FINISH THE LEVEL II CLASS?... On Wednesday night, the DD's hold a workshop at Baker Community Center (at 7942 Church Street in Millington) from 7:00pm until around 9:15pm. (Wednesday night workshops will resume on September 9th, 1998) There is no set syllabus or schedule of what is taught at these workshops. . We usually spend some time on our exhibition routines, some time on learning new dances/moves and some time on just dancing for fun. Jeannette keeps a running list of requests for the workshop agenda. If you want to learn something specific, see her about getting it put on the list (if we know it). If you know a dance/move that is new to the DD's and are interested in teaching it in workshop, see Ken. We are ALWAYS interested in new material and new techniques. Step descriptions of the line, partner and mixer dances we do are available on Wednesday nights. (and soon to be listed on this WEB sight).

HOW DO I GET A SHIRT AND/OR JACKET?... T-shirts, golf-style shorts, and jackets are available AT COST through Jeannette and Ken Dixon. The T-shirts are available in sizes ranging from children's sizes up to adult size XX large. (The largest size costs slightly more than the others) . The golf shirts range in adult sizes Small to XXX Large. (XX & XXX Large cost slightly more than the others. ) Since our supplier requires a minimum of 12 shirts to an order, we usually order shirts at the end of the Level II class. The minimum order for jackets is three, so we order them whenever three or more people want them. The sizes available for jackets range from X Small to XXX large. (Again, the cost for XX and XXX Large is slightly more than the other sizes. ) It generally takes 3-4 weeks for an order to be delivered. THE SHIRTS AND JACKETS MUST BE PAID FOR WHEN THEY ARE ORDERED.

HOW CAN I GET A COFFEE MUG, BUMPER STICKER OR LICENSE TAG? ... Coffee mugs and bumper stickers with the "Kick up your heels" boot and the Dixie Dancers name are now available. The mugs are $3.00 each and the bumper stickers are $1.00 each. See Jeannette to get one. Charlie Smith makes the black "Dixie Dancer" license tags. They are available from him or from Debbie and cost is $7.00 each.

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE IN AN EXHIBITION?... Anyone who knows the routines is welcome to participate. Check with Ken if you are uncertain (or if you have not completed both the Level I and Level II classes yet). We do NOT have a "Dance Team" and are not concerned with perfection. Exhibitions are for fun and sharing our love of country-western dancing and music with the community. We try to schedule one (sometimes more) exchbition per month - usually at a nursing home or retirement center. We find that performing for these people and visiting with them is very rewarding. We also enjoy participating in community events like Millington's Cotton Country Festival, and Munford Celebrate. Participation at a nursing home exhibition is wonderful practice for these other (highly visible) performances.

HOW DO I GET A COPY OF THE SOCIAL ROSTER?... An updated Social Roster of current DD's is kept by Jeannette and is published annually in February. Information is verified at the beginning of each year When shirts are delivered, a slip of paper is attached to the bag asking if you want your name added to the Dixie Dancer Social Roster. By filling out the requested information and returning it to Jeannette, you will be added to the social roster mailing list and receive your copy (usually within a couple of weeks) either at the class or workshop, or through the mail. If you need a complete, current copy at any other time let Jeannette know. If you have an unlisted telephone number, please let Jeannette know and it will not be published or given out in any way. We do ask that once you receive a copy of the DD Social Roster, please DO NOT give names or phone numbers to anyone else. We don't want this information to be used as a mailing contact list for any other group or organization. (this list is not published on this WEB sight nore any of that information given out!)

BIRTHDAYS... During the Workshop on the second Wednesday of each month, all DD's are encouraged to sign birthday cards for those celebrating their birthday during that month. At the break, the birthdays for the month are recognized, cards are presented to those in attendance and the birthday cake is cut and shared. The cards are mailed to those DD's not attending that workshop.

PARTIES... At irregular intervals during the year, the DD's get together for a party. Usually, the party is a pot-luck supper followed by dancing. Information about an upcoming party is circulated at the Wednesday workshops and (usually) by mailing a flyer to everyone on the Social Roster. Barn dances are often held several times a year in a real barn!

When the Dixie Dancers have a barn dance, it's really in a barn!  Thanks to Chris and Phyllis who let us use their barn for many years!!

Anytime the Dixie Dancers have a dance we always have plenty of food!

We do it all, partner and line dancing!

INCOME FROM SOME CLASSES... A fee is charged by some of the places where the DD's teach. The Dixie Dancers (as a group) get a portion of these fees. This money is used to pay for various expenses such as printing (the handouts of dances, the social rosters, newsletters, and flyers), postage, birthday cards, birthday cakes, flowers (send for illnesses & funerals) and to pay for the parties we have throughout the year.
